Every year in February, Viareggio and other large Italian cities hold a parade known as Carnival. This celebration is similar to Mardi Gras, as it is meant to be a celebration before Lent begins. The first Carnival in Viareggio dates back to 1873 and was only held for Shrove Tuesday, this parade was meant to mark the end of Lent. Today there are multiple parades in February, Carnival has become more of a giant celebration in the town with parade floats of all genres, masked people, food tents, and dancers.
